Context

Financial institutions and businesses combined are critical drivers of an economy. Both the banking sector and the businesses play an important role in the socio-economic-political ecosystem. On one hand, the banking sector fuels businesses through lending and they also are custodians of significant proportions of public money. The businesses on the other hand employ large proportion of the labour force, has control over several kinds of resources. their work has high social impact and costs, and in the market-led political economy, they have a significant influence on policy decisions.

However, the accountability demanded from businesses is often limited to financial integrity and money flows. Journalism around corporations rarely ventures outside the realm of press releases, quarterly earnings and news about mergers and acquisitions. Much of the media coverage on corporate practices has been reduced to a PR exercise, and when the media does engage in critique, it allocates much of its critical gaze to specific scams and big frauds but rarely examines the everyday practices and policies of businesses with much scrutiny.

Aim

The one day boot camp for journalists, communicators, media students and researchers would aim to drive the point that for businesses to take issues of social responsibility seriously, proactive media reportage is needed. Just like the media scrutinizes political power, it must attempt to hold the same mirror to businesses in more responsible ways.
